{"id":1734,"date":"2013-04-29T09:47:49","date_gmt":"2013-04-29T13:47:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.changinglanes.biz\/?p=1734"},"modified":"2013-04-29T09:56:01","modified_gmt":"2013-04-29T13:56:01","slug":"do-what-i-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.changinglanes.biz\/index.php\/2013\/04\/29\/do-what-i-say\/","title":{"rendered":"Do What I Say!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>&#8220;The man who gets the most satisfactory results is not always the man with the most brilliant single mind, but rather the man who can best coordinate the brains and talents of his associates<\/em>.&#8221;&#8211;Sir William Alton Jones<\/p>\n<p>We have all heard a manager joke to employees saying \u201cDo what I say, not what I do\u201d.\u00a0 Managing by modeling the behavior we need is often the first step in Great Leadership and it is one of the hardest.\u00a0 Today&#8217;s managers and business owners often feel overworked and harried by all the things they need to do and sometimes tempers can flare.\u00a0 Modeling the behavior you want means more than just smiling and being polite, it requires us to honestly assess and change &#8211; really hard things but awesome if you want to move beyond mediocre.\u00a0 &#8220;Practice What You Preach&#8221; can mean we can train and be trained, be a team player not always the team leader, and model continuous improvement.\u00a0 What else can help?\u00a0 Here are places to start:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Teamwork:\u00a0 If we want people to be part of our team, we need to provide time and support of the teams we lead and support. <\/strong>Most managers desire staff and work groups to work together, yet some of these same managers will gossip about, put down or not support peers or other departments.\u00a0 This will often foster an attitude of &#8220;us&#8221;
